A spiritual cleaning for the home

On Saturday mornings my Dominican mom would wake up early, clean our apartment and play merengue and bachata on the radio. After cleaning, she would burn incense and chant positive affirmations, walking from the back of the apartment to the front. Opening the front door to release all negativity. At the time, I did not appreciate it. She would wake my little sister and I up at 7 am, expecting us to help out and do our chores.

It took sometime before I began to incorporate my mothers rituals to my weekly routine. After leaving the nest, I found myself cleansing my home in the same way my mother did. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. I noticed that when I did not cleanse my home it felt stagnate and dull. When I cleansed my home and blessed it, it felt light, calm and happy. I believe my home has it’s own spirit. Just like most humans, home is happy when it is carried for.

Over time, I picked up a few other tricks from friends and spiritual gurus. Now I am intrigued by the art of feng shui and giving love to the environments I find myself in. Here is a short guide to bless your home, work space or any environment of your liking.

How to spiritually clean your home:

  • Wear all white or light colors (Black absorbs and white reflects)

  • Stretch or do 15 minutes of yoga (Gaia channel, your own sequence or youtube)

  • 10–20 minutes of meditation (mindfulness, transcendental, yoga nidra, etc)

  • Affirm and Pray for what you are letting go and what you are open to receive. This video breaks down the affirmative prayer technique.

  • Read a passage or paragraph for your favorite spiritual text. Here is a book I love called The Mirror of Intimacy.

  • Visualize your home as a clean, loving, safe place for you and your family

  • Light sage, palo santo, yerba buena or an incense of your choice. Begin from the back of the house to the front.

  • Open the doors and windows to let out all the negative vibes

  • Light a white candle for one or two of your ancestors and create a place for them in your home with their photo, a glass of water and a white cloth. Ask them to protect your home with love and peace.

  • Then end your clearing to talk about your vision for your new home. You can do this as an individual (yes , you can talk to yourself), couple and/ or family

  • Close the ceremony with an affirmative prayer

  • Take a shower, have a healthy meal and congratulate yourself for your growth

  • Repeat once a week, twice a month or as often as you desire
